Eng Ed Skills Starters
The Eng Ed Skills Starters are a new collection of direct-to-classroom videos that support learners to find out about how to tackle a range of making skills. The videos model a fundamental skill, provide opportunity for learners to practise the skill and challenge them to apply the skill in their own creations.
Each video is introduced by Dr Chips, in which he suggests teachers pause and encourage learners to try out the ideas he’s suggesting.
Each video has accompanying teacher notes as well as many also having additional supporting resources and tools to support learners in practising engineering skills in the classroom and at home.
Support your learners to develop making!
Stiffening and Strengthening
Video duration: 9 mins
This video revisits the skill of cutting and joining to make a 3D shape using a 2D net. Dr Chips will explain different methods of stiffening and strengthening materials and structures including laminating, ribbing, corrugation and triangulation.
Accurate Measuring and Cutting
Video duration: 14 mins
This video focuses on the skill of accurate measuring and cutting, using a range of tools and materials. Learners will consider what accurate means and the importance of choosing the appropriate tools and materials, as well as the importance of precise measurements.
Joining Techniques
Video duration: 18 mins
This video focuses on the skill of accurate cutting and joining to make a 3D shape using a 2D net. This will then lead to different methods of joining, including static and dynamic joins.
Exploded Views
Video duration: 9 mins
This video introduces the concept and skill of technical drawing through the media of exploding views or diagrams. Learners will look at the importance of communicating their ideas in a written technical format. They will also develop an understanding of how engineers refine and adapt their work through revisiting original drawings.
