Why would an Engineer take something apart that’s working?

Get ready to become Debris Detectives and think like engineers tackling one of space’s toughest problems - space junk. From old satellites to rocket parts, debris is piling up.

In this challenge, learners explore how engineers design robotic solutions to clean up the Earth’s orbit. They begin by exploring how systems thinking helps engineers to understand how ‘things’ work.

How could an engineer adapt an existing product to remove space debris?

Learners explore the concept of systems thinking by examining how the different parts of a product work together to achieve its purpose. They investigate how changes or failures in one part can affect the performance of the entire system.

How do engineers make things work better?

Having created their own prototype, learners now improve and modify it using a systematic method, controlling variables, making detailed observations and recording their findings. Engineers test, tweak and triumph!

These sessions support Goals 9 and 15, which aim to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
