Engineering Educates Farmvention Challenge

Over 90,000 pupils registered in 2022-23.
Which pathway will you explore this year?

Inspiring thousands of young engineers through real-world contexts

The Engineering Educates Farmvention Challenge involves 3 different pathways tailored to inspire 7-14 year olds to think as engineers in the context of British farming.

Each includes sequences of five curriculum-linked sessions. Learners apply their knowledge and skills from maths, science, design technology and computing within the rich-context of British farming and agricultural engineering. The pathways are written by teachers-for teachers and lead learners through the engineering design process with embedding links to environmental sustainability. When thinking and working as engineers, learners solve problems that are true to the challenges farms face, with ample opportunity for creativity, imagination and collaboration.

The challenge is in its second year, and will culminate in March 2024.

Choosing a pathway for your learners

Age 7 - 9 years

Learners are introduced to British farming, with particular focus on arable farming.
They create 3D models, develop and test prototypes and use Micro:bits to automate their designs.

Age 9-11 years

This pathway focuses on British dairy farming. Learners explore and create solutions to improve cattle health and living conditions. They create and automate 3D models to improve communication between animals and farmers.

Age 11 - 14 years

A key feature of this challenge is sustainability on British farms. Learners explore the environmental impact of farming and investigate how to balance the emission of greenhouse gases and its removal. They design and create solutions for farms of the future.

Engage in meaningful ways with farmers and engineers

Engaging with farmers is a purposeful way to enrich learning and to support learners to make meaningful connections with people in careers that make a difference to our world.
